Description

I get this question more often than you would think. A student walks in with a decent percentage. Not outstanding, but solid. They want to study in the UK. They have heard of Leicester because a cousin or a family friend lives there. And then they ask me about De Montfort University.

Here is what I have learned after placing students there for almost a decade. DMU has clear strengths and clear weaknesses. Pick the right course, and you get a good education at a reasonable cost.

First, a Quick Reality Check

De Montfort University is in Leicester. Large Indian population there. Good food. London is about an hour by train.

The university became a university in 1992. No ancient history. No dreaming spires. What it has instead is a focus on practical, employability-driven education. They care about whether you get a job after graduation. They care less about research rankings.

That trade-off works for some students. It does not work for others.

The Best Courses at DMU

Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

This is DMU's crown jewel. Their pharmacy school is well respected. The MPharm degree is accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council. Students spend significant time in placements.

Here is the catch for Indian students. Pharmacy is regulated. You need foundation training and registration exams after your degree. It is a longer pathway. If you plan to return to India, check whether the degree is recognized by the Pharmacy Council of India first.

Engineering and Manufacturing

DMU has invested millions in their Engineering Innovation Centre. I have visited it. CNC machines. Robotics labs. CAD suites. It looks like a modern factory floor, not a classroom.

The best courses are mechanical engineering, mechatronics, and aerospace engineering. DMU works with Rolls-Royce and Bombardier. Fees are lower than Russell Group universities. Equipment is comparable.

Computing and Creative Technology

Courses like computer science, cyber security, and game design have strong industry links. DMU hosts an annual Games Festival. Students get feedback from actual developers.

The cyber security course is worth noting. DMU has a dedicated Cyber Security Centre that works with local police. In this field, practical experience matters more than university name.

Art and Design

DMU has a genuine reputation in fashion, footwear, and product design. The Vijay Patel Building is impressive. The footwear design course is rare. Not many universities offer it.

The challenge for Indian students is the portfolio requirement. You cannot just show grades. Start preparing your portfolio months before the deadline.

Business and Law

Here is where I need to be honest. DMU's business school is fine. Not exceptional. Not bad. Just average. Nothing you would not get at ten other UK universities.

Law is similar. The LLB is accredited. But DMU is not a law powerhouse. Look at Nottingham, Birmingham, or Leeds if law is your priority.

The De Montfort University Acceptance Rate

The De Montfort University acceptance rate for international students is roughly 75% to 80%. That puts it in the same range as Hertfordshire or Teesside.

But here is what that means in practice. If you meet the published requirements and your application is complete, you are very likely to get an offer.

Typical requirements for Indian students:

  • Undergraduate: 60% to 65% in Class XII

  • Postgraduate: 55% to 60% in a bachelor's degree

  • IELTS: 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5

However, for pharmacy, engineering, and art and design, the acceptance rate drops. Pharmacy often asks for 70% or above with strong chemistry and biology marks. Do not assume the 75% number applies to your course.

What About Scholarships?

DMU does well here. They offer the DMU International Scholarship with fee reductions of £1,000 to £3,000 per year. They also participate in the British Council's GREAT Scholarship scheme. Indian students can apply for awards of £10,000 or more.

There are also early payment discounts of 2% to 5% if you pay tuition in full before the deadline.

Where DMU Falls Short

First, the campus is a mix. Some buildings are excellent. Others are old and tired. The student union building needs work.

Second, graduate outcomes for business and humanities are average. Do not expect DMU to open doors for investment banking or top law firms.

Third, Leicester is not a tourist destination. It is functional, diverse, and affordable. If you want cobblestone streets and historic architecture, go to Bath or York.

How to Apply

For undergraduate courses, use UCAS. DMU's code is D26. For postgraduate courses, apply directly through their portal called MyDMU.

Documents needed: transcripts, English test scores, passport copy, statement of purpose, and two reference letters.

DMU's admissions team typically responds within 10 to 15 working days. For September 2026 intake, the early scholarship deadline is March 31. Popular courses like pharmacy and engineering fill up by April. Do not wait until June.

Final Verdict

Choose De Montfort University if you want to study pharmacy, engineering, computing, or art and design. Those are their genuine strengths. Choose it if your budget is limited and you need affordable tuition and living costs.

Do not choose DMU for business or law unless the location or cost is your main reason. Do not choose it if you care about global rankings or research prestige.

The De Montfort University acceptance rate is high for most courses. That should give you confidence, not carelessness. Apply properly. Meet the requirements. Write a statement of purpose that shows you actually understand what the university offers.

If you do that, DMU can be a genuinely good choice. Not for everyone. But for the right student with the right course, absolutely.
